Osteoporosis and walking

2016/7/21 18:02:22

Question
I was told by my GP that I have a thinning hip bone and that if I walk for exercise I should stop. I thought exercise was good for building muscle to help take the load off the bone. What is your advice? I am 63 and otherwise in good health.

Answer
Your doctor has more authority than me, but I am always concerned when anyone recommends a stop to exercise. Maybe a shift to other kinds of exercise might be indicated in extreme cases, but never quit! You are right. Exercise does increase muscle mass to help bone, but also has direct effects on increasing bone mass. There are definitely hormonal effects, but exercise is a very strong factor.

A second opinion might be useful.
