walking vs running

Question
Scott
I have noticed something and would like your opinion, as it seems to go against what most of the fitness experts say.
I am 50, overweight, but decent shape.
I used to run three times a week or more on my treadmill for at least 30 minutes.
In spite of watching what and how much I eat I wasnt losing weight.
I could go for a couple weeks then I got sore knees and feet, and just got burned out so I would take a week off.
I recently began WALKING, at a fast clip. I put away the expensive runners and got a pair of more flat soled walking shoes.
I am just amazed at the difference!
I can walk for an hour a day now, no problems. I have more energy, no soreness, and cant wait until the next walk!
I am even seeing my waist shrink a bit!
What gives?
I used to see people walking fast and I would think they were wasting their time-they should be running like me!
I see people sweating on the treadmill now or huffing along outside and I feel like telling them to slow down!
Any cooments appreciated!

Answer
You have discovered the great advantage of walking. While running works better for some, far more people would get more out of walking. Humans are made to walk, and run, too, but running can take a toll on the leg joints. The truth is that walking gives almost all the health benefits of running, especially if you occasionally push the walking pace.

As you have seen, the advantages of a type of exercise that minimizes aches and pains while leaving you energized are many. I still love running, but the older I get, the less my body can stand of it.

One caution I would give you is about the shoes. You really should continue to buy high quality running shoes for your walking. Their extra cushioning will protect fro injuries long term.
