Fix a snapped mast?

2016/7/22 14:38:39

Question
I was out on Lake Superior the other day with 6-8ft waves
that well, lets just say I eventually ended up on a rock
barrior and my mast had snapped. It's a 460cm 75% carbon
sailworks mast and broke 2 ft. after the female end.
I was just going to shove a wooden dowel rod into it,
gorilla glue and possibly fiberglass the seam...

Do you have any suggestions?
I don't really have the money for a new one.
Thanks!

Answer
Hey Colin,

You could get away with repairing your mast but it won't perform the way it was designed. Your sails might not even rig properly once you stiffen the middle part of the mast. I would suggest you check ebay or craigslist for a decent used mast.

As for using gorilla glue on a carbon mast, not sure I would try it. Try some epoxy resin along with fiberglass cloth if you decide to repair the mast.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
