Question
I am an experienced sailor and surfer. I'm contemplating getting into windsurfing but am baffled about what equipment to get. I don't want to buy an entry level board and sail that I'll get bored with quickly. Being that I weigh 225 I also don't want to get a board that will underperform or ride too low in the water. Basically I'd like a setup that is fast, light, and will keep me interested. I don't plan on doing any extreme windsurfing but it should be durable as well. Any advice?

Answer
Hey Mike,

I suggest you take your contemplating to the the next level. You won't regret it. Windsurfing vs. sailing is like Formula racing to a sunday drive. Windsurfing vs. surfing is more time on the waves instead of sitting on a board waiting for them. I am into a variety of sports but windsurfing is my favorite.

There are some great boards out there that are easy to learn on and yet still fun to ride after you get proficient. The new formula boards and light air boards are just the ticket for a guy your size. The newer boards are wider, shorter, lighter, fast, and lots of fun to ride.

There are a variety of riding styles that utilize specific equipment. Wave sailing has more wave oriented boards and sails. Freeride encompasses flat water, speed, bump & jump, and waves if you want them. Slalom is more speed and high speed jibing. Formula is a light air venue that is replacing the long board and course racing.
