Lake size and windsurfing

2016/7/22 14:37:50

Question
I live on a 60 acre lake, once a gravel pit converted into a residential area.  Have never windsurfed before but would like to begin.  My question is does the size of the lake permit adequate space/distance for windsurfing? The distance between shores is probably about 1/2 mile at most.

My second question is can you recommend an all-purpose, good quality windsurfer?  My parents have a place on a 9000-plus acre lake in Michigan and I will ultimately use the windsurfer there.  Cost not exactly a concern, I don't need a racing windsurfer but would like something good enough to avoid the trap of upgrading every 3 years like I do with my computer.

Thank you for your attention.

Mike

Answer
Hey Mike,

Size of lake is not much of an issue as long as the wind is tot obstructed by high cliffs, etc. If there is steady winds at your location, it should work fine.

There are a few good beginner/intermediate type boards that would work well for you. Look for something with a daggerboard. Chech out Bic Techno, Starboard Go, and Mistral Malibu. I've listed them in order of my recommendation for quality and performance. Just Google these to find more info.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
