Hip bursitus

2016/7/16 9:29:31

Question
I have tentively been diagnosed by a Physical Therapist and an Orthopedist as having hip bursitis. They say It's caused by my sitting too much ----surfing the internet and reading 8- 10 hours a day. I am 52 years old and "retired". Do You think my bursitis may have been caused by bike riding as one does not just sit when riding but one's buttocks slide about a bit when riding despite avoiding all the potholes on city streets which is what I ride on. Do you think 1 hour a day of riding could aggravate my bursitis to the point of outweighing the cardiovascular benefits?
Thanks in advance,
James K

Answer
A doctor would be better at answering this question.  Answers may vary from different doctors, but they would know the circumstances better.

There are quite a few choices such as riding a stationary bike for cardiovascular health, if potholes on the road are a big problem.

Bike conditions vary a lot from really smooth paved trails and shoulders to rough pavement to cinder and dirt.

Also bikes vary a lot.  One can swap out seats and replace them with more comfortable seats.  Some bikes offer lots of shock absorbers.  Others allow for sitting lower down such as the recumbent bicycles.  Costs vary.

I don't drive so my bicycle is my main longer distance transportation.  Walking is my shorter distance transportation.  At age 54 I am not aware of any problems so far.  I don't know much about bursitis.

Your doctor would probably have better answers.

I do know that there are a lot of choices in bike conditions, especially if you live in an area with fairly good bicycle planning.  Some areas aren't as good for biking.  Also there are many choices in bikes, shock absorbers, seats and so forth.  Many bike shops have kits that measure your dimensions and can fit you to a bike.  Often it's good to find a bike that is a good fit to your height.
