Question
QUESTION: Hey there looking for advise on finding info on rpm ranges for my engine beings i bought boat used im alittle lost, its a 91' bayliner capri 3.0L alpha I drive i have a 19 degree prop i run at 3150 at 43 mph. i have heard rumor every degree up minus 50 rpm and more top-end? obviously to much is bad to a point. my friend has a 22ft bay 4.3L runs 4400 rpm at 42mph with a 21 degree prop. make sense?
and whats the hype about 4 blade?

ANSWER: Hi Lance V....thanks for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

First of all, what is it you're attempting to accomplish and for what purpose? Secondly, unless you're racing or involved with fishing tournaments, there's no need for a 4-bladed stainless steel prop.

QUESTION: sorry i do mostly cruising so im mainly looking for a top-end cruise prop but dont want to loose ability to pull things, i just heard 4 blade helps you plane sooner and along with a hydrofoil from stingray i was kinda lookin for a top-end prop with ability to plane without struggling to bad. i was looking at a SS 21 degree but i dont want to go to high to where my bottom end is just sluggish so maybe
20 degree ss 4 blade with hydrofoil? i mean the thing sounds good at 3100 is that the sweet spot for this engine
i really appreciate the feedback ahead of time here ive had little help.

Answer
Lance...what's the length of your '91 Bayliner Capri? If you're achieving 43mph at 3150rpm, you're doing just fine and I wouldn't change anything because the cost would not justify the means. It's your choice. If you're determined to obtain absolute maximum performance, I suggest you consult a local MerCruiser dealer who can assist you to select the optimum prop for your intended purposes. Otherwise, save your money.

Regards,
Ron
