buying used - how to check condition

2016/7/15 18:32:00

Question
I am considering purchasing used form an unknown individuals 8 hours distance.  Motor is 2000 Yamaha 150 Vmax HDI.  Time and distance will not allow a prefessional check of the motor.  What can you advise for a non-professional to check condition.  Details on compression checks, previous overheating, cooling issues, and all other suggestions appreciated.  Thanks, Mike

Answer
Hi Mike....Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question.

The answer is simple - make the offer to purchase the outboard motor conditional and subject to you obtaining  an inspection by a qualified and reliable marine mechanic.

What purpose was the motor used for?
How many hours has the engine operated?
Does the lower gear case (bullet/cone-shaped)show evidence of repairs, incl. the prop and skeg? Paint discoloration?
What color is the oil in the lower unit?
What are the results of a compression test?
Do the head bolts appear to have been previously removed?
Make certain a water test is done in a tank, a lake, or with ear muffs, and let engine run for no less than 20 minutes.

Although I'm not a mechanic, I believe you'll have done your homework to determine whether this engine is worth of purchasing.
