fibergalss hull repair

Question
Hi Ron

I'm a bit confused.

I'm refinishing a Laser. I have it sanded down. there are some spots that need to be filled due to some deep scratches and I opened up the hull deck joint in areas that it was coming apart.

I intended to fill the joint with epoxy and paint the rest with Interlux or the like but now people tell me that I need to

   * apply gelcoat first, then paint,
   * others say I can just apply colored gelcoat
   * still others say that interlux or Awlgrip or some 3m product area all polyurethane finishes and that they will seal the fiberglass just the same as gelcoat
   * one aft corner was also damaged. I want to build that up with a layer of Fglass. Im assuming Im going to soak it in a bath of resin and hardener, apply it, let it dry, sand and paint.
   * once i know what I need I can buy some from you.

please advise.

best, Phil

Answer
Hi Phil...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to respond to your question. Keep in mind, I'm not a professional boat repairer/restorer/retail source.

The hull/deck joint repair can be accomplished using a fibreglass cloth or a woven material, dependant upon the severety of the deterioration/damage. And yes, you'll have to soak the fibreglass in an expoxy resin, so make sure you follow the directions, and add only the recommended amount of catalyst or hardner. The more hardner, the quicker the mixture heats up and eventually solidfies. Very important, do the process in an extremely well ventilated area.

Minor gelcoat crazings/cracks can be filled with gelcoat, so long as you follow instructions for mixing. Best you consult a professional source from whom you purchase the products.

After ALL repairs are completed, apply the gelcoat finnish/color of your choice. Make certain the viscosity is within the manufacturer's recommendations for the prevailing climate (humidity/temperature).

Safe Boating
