Johnson pee stream for cooling

2016/7/15 18:33:26

Question
I have a 1995 115hp Johnson 2cycle outboard.  The stream that comes out of the top of motor is relatively non-existent.  The previous owner said it only comes out when it reaches it operating temp.  Should this outboard be shooting a steady steam at all times?  Or is it ok the way it is?  (we ran the boat all summer last year with no problems!)  Cheers!  Mike

Answer
Hi Mike....Thank you for selecting the undersigned to reply to your question.

That stream of water discharging from the underside of the power head of your o/b motor indicates the impeller in the lower unit housing is properly functioning and pumping a sufficient degree of fresh water through the water journals of the block, thus cooling the power head while the engine is in operation. The water stream should be present immediately after the engine is started, otherwise, there's a strong probability the pistons will eventually seize as the power head overheats and expands due to a lack of sufficient cooling.

Absence of the "pee stream" indicates one of three likely problems: (1)the rubber impeller in the lower unit is not functioning and is not pumping fresh water to cool the power head; (2) there could be an obstruction/blockage in the lower unit's fresh water intake such as a plastic bag, etc., or foreign matter is preventing the impeller from properly operating; or (3) there is an obstruction/blockage in the water journals in the power head, restricting or eliminating water flow to cool the engine. This is the most unlikely but possible cause.

I recommend you consult a qualified and reliable marine mechanic to diagnose and resolve the problem, before you damage the engine beyond economical repair.
