gas smell

2016/7/16 9:27:42

Question
I am getting closer to buying an 01 2400 Wellcraft Martinique. I did a survey but the only problem was a smell of gas in the port side storage under the v-berth. Could it be a gas fume vent that is broken? And if so, is it difficult to find the problem and fix it?
Thanks
Harry

Answer
Harry - thanks for your inquiry. While I am not totally familiar with the model of Wellcraft, I find it hard to believe the fuel tank would be further than midship. Fuel vents are usually located adjacent to or in close proximity to the location of the fuel tank and/or fuel filler pipe. Fuel odour extending forward to the V-berth would suggest a possibility of prior spillage that was not properly cleaned up. There is a device called a vapour detector, and its signal or readout increases as the consentration of fumes becomes greater. It would assist in determining where or what is causing the smell of fuel vapours. I would check the bilge for cleanliness and fumes, and make sure the limber holes are free of debris and are clear. From below the deck, most vent pipes or hoses are usually visible and a flashlight is a big help. Make sure you do a thorough inspection by following the fuel line and vent line from top to bottom very carefully while the engine is off and while it is running. Yes, its time consuming but, it may result in positive detection of the problem. If you believe you have been unsuccessful, best you consult a local marine repair facility. Their expert will likely identify the problem quite quickly.

If you have any further input or questions, please, don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck and safe boating.
