I have a 1984 Rinker with a 3.8 GM V6, OMC outdrive. Just tuned up(oil & filter, fuel filter/water seperator, plugs, distributor cap, rotoe, points and condenser). Runs like new at idle. Reach about 2000-2500 rpm and it bogs down and backfires. The guy I bought the boat from said he had the same problem and took it in to the shop. He said the guy adjusted the throttle linkage but he did'nt know how so he could'nt help me. Can you tell me how to adjust the linkage?
Answer -
Hello Michael,
The problem may not be with the linkage. The problem could be cause by a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter, you might also check that none of the fuel supply hoses are soft that might be collapsing at higher fuel pump suction from the fuel tank. One last thing to check would be the electronic ignition module, it might be failing at higher RPM's? With the bogging down and back firing I would believe that some kind of fault exist with the ignition module.

OK, I was working on the boat yesterday and you can see the gas is just pouring in the carb at higher rpm, and you can see it dripping at lower rpm. I was told that you should not be able to see this, that the gas should be near vapor going in. It runs smooth up to about 3500 rpm. I took the top part of the carb off and made sure nothing was clogged and everything was clean, put it back together and no diff. Do you thing a carb rebuild is in order? At this point I'm ready to sink the damn thing rather than pay $85 an hour for labor/ maintanence.

Answer
Michael,
Your right about the fuel flowing at a high rate, it sounds like the fuel metering orifices are worn out and they are dumping too much fuel into the carb. Also the float may be out of adjustment or the needle valve is worn out and/or sticking. You may want to purchase a rebuild kit, the last time I checked they were about $30 complete.
