Rotted Motor Mounts

2016/7/16 9:27:50

Question
The lag bolts had completely ripped out on one side. When I cut an inspection hole where the mounts anchor to the boat, The wood was totally soaked and rotted. I tore out all the old rotted wood and want to replace it.
Do I just use a new 4 X 4 and fiberglass it into place? Any suggestions? I have digital pictures if they would help.

Answer
USUALLY YOU CAN CUT THE TOP OFF THE FIBERGLASS AS FAR AS THE ROT IS TO GOOD WOOD, BOTH FORWARD AND AFT. THEN USE OAK SINCE IT IS A GOOD HARDWOOD, FITTED TO THE SIDES OF THE HOLE LEFT WHERE YOU TOOK OUT THE OLD WOOD. THEN POUR A FILLER OF EPOXY TO FILL THE VOIDS INSIDE BETWEEN THE WOOD AND EXISTING FIBERGLASS. THEN FIBERGLASS OVER THE TOP WITH WOVEN ROVEN AND MAT. YOU SHOULD FIND SOME ONE WHO IS PROFICENT WORKING WITH GLAS. HOPE THIS HELPS.
