PACIFIERS on racehorses

hello sir, may i know why to use PACIFIERS or mesh eyed hood on racehorses? do flies really irritate the horse galloping at that great speed? the stable hand for this horse told me that he never enters into the track without this equipment. the underfoot surface used at our local racetrack is turf.

Answer
These are not allowed in the United States since most races here are dirt and the mesh will get clogged with mud and cause total loss of vision. The mesh has nothing to do with flys. It is used to block clods of dirt from striking the eye.
