Question
QUESTION: hello sir. in your 30 years of thoroughbred racehorse training experience, have you used copper alloy mouthpiece snaffles on horses? did they do well? which bit mouthpiece would you suggest a new trainer to use on his stable horses to train for the race?

i believe that stainless steel doesnt encourage salivation. would you still suggest this mouthpiece?

ANSWER: HI -- I ALWAYS START WITH THE MOST COMMON EASY BIT YOU CAN USE ON A YOUNG HORSES MOUTH. IF THEN YOU SEE THAT THE HORSE NEEDS MORE CONTROL, THEN YOU CHANGE TO A STRONGEER TYPE BIT. A RING BIT SNAFFLE BIT IS A VERY GOOD BIT TO USE ON THE AVERAGE HORSE.. IT HAS A GOOD CONTROLL FOR A YOUNG HORSE. THANKS ED HESS

QUESTION: thanks for your answer. sir, but i am more concerned about the bit mouthpiece material. which one would you use on young horses and older horses?

Answer
hi -- you can use rubber bits on young horses and steel or aluminum is for the older horses with a tougher mouth. you have to try different bits to see how the horses respond to them. i don't think the material of the bits matter that much once your horses are use to them in their mouths.  thanks ED HESS          hi  you can use any bit made out of any material on any horse and then pick the bit that works on a specific horse. i try rubber bits first. then aluminum and then steel or copper. see which bit works the best on any particular horse so you know which bits does the most good for you. thanks ED HESS
