career advice

Question
I am very passionate about the horse racing industry. I worked as a groom all through high school and have been working as an exercise rider (riding a lot of young horses) on a farm in Nebraska for 2 years now. I will be graduating college in May with an animal science degree. After that I would like to go to Kentucky and eventually get a job as a farm manager or preferably a farm trainer. I understand that to do that I would most likely have to start at the bottom and work my way up to one of those positions. How would you suggest I eventually get to one of those positions? What career path should I take to get there and what should my next step be in the process? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
I would just go to the different farms in the area and tell them your experience and what you are willing to do and go from there. You may want to seek employment at a race track. This will expose you to a lot of horse people and you may be able to find a position there. This would also give you more practical hands on experience. At the track, seek a trainer who is willing to help you with obtaining your trainer's license. If you have a trainer's license, you have a much greater chance getting the job you want at a farm or an assistant trainer's job with a good operation at the race track.
