Question
I was thinking of going to tafe to learn to track ride. What are the best clothes to wear?

Answer
Hi Amy,
There is always a job for good track riders. I assume you know how to ride and have some experience. You can appreciate that a trainer will want to know your riding background and that you are both competent and keen.
No trainer will let you ride an expensive thoroughbred unless you know what you are doing and can follow instructions. As a track rider you would be required to exercise the horses according to instructions given for each horse.
If you have not ridden thoroughbreds before you will need some time to get used to it. They are much bigger than pony club horses, much more tempremental and they are fast! They also break easily so trainers are watching how you handle the horse and if you have a natural 'connection' with horses in general.

As for clothing, good riding boots are important as you will ride short leathers (ie crouching on your toes like real jockeys, close fitting jeans or cotton trousers/slacks, long sleeve t shirt (close fitting, no flappy bits!) a rain jacket and a riding hat. You will need gloves as well.
A trainer may provide some of this gear, and a chest protector/crash jacket, once you have proved yourself.

I would contact a female jockey (maybe a retired one)and ask these questions of her. Most of the female jockeys I know would be only to happy to help you get started.
I would also go and visit some of your local training farms and ask about work around the stables. There is no better place to learn the trade (and get the opportunities)than if you are prepared to roll your sleeves up and do some of the less glamorous work associated with horses.
I hope this helps and that I see your name on a cup winner in a few years.
Good luck,
Don Boddie
