New to OTB

Question
We just got an OTB center near us.  I've been twice and had a lot of fun, though not much luck w/ my bets.  I'm still learning to read the program to understand the information better.  I typically just bet about $2 at a time and if I win my money back and maybe enough for a couple of beers, I'm happy.

I'm not looking to win huge, but I would like some sort of system that will increase my chances of winning (so maybe I can buy my buddy a beer too!).  I typically pick the favorite or another horse with favorable odds to show or win.  No big payoffs but not a consistent winner either.

I know there are no absolutes (that's why they call it 'gambling' and not 'winning'), but can you offer some simple info that will help me make better bets?  Are there any good web sites that can give me pointers?

Thanks for your help.  Have a great day!
