Understanding Horse Racing Bits: A Guide for Trainers
Question
Hi I have been involved in horseracing all my life. I own and breed to race. I do have a trainer but Im wanting to train my own horses, as I pretty much do, so i want to know more about bits. I know my horse runs in a ring bit because thats pretty much the only kind my trainer uses on alot of his horses. I want to buy I guess a d ring and a egg butt or egg ring and a loose ring. Which bit will do what? Which bit is used on most racehorses and why? Which bit have you had most luck with? And anything else I should know about selecting a bit for certain racehorses?
Answer
hi well a ring bit Dexter snaffle is a basic bit used on the race tracks. a rubber d bit and a gag bit is used for a tough galloper also. there are so many bits to use on any one horse as he needs different bits to control him. i always start out with the least harsh bit to see how the horse acts to it. if they need more control then you go to a different bit till you get the desired results.you can go to your local tack shop and take a look at all of the bits sold. if your trainer uses a certain bit on your horse, then that must be the bit he thinks works best on that horse. hope that helps you. thanks ED HESS
