A horse named Prince Vitesch III or something?

Question
QUESTION: I am trying to find information about a racehorse that survived a war.  His name was Prince Vitesch III or something like that.  I don't recall if it was a World War or Korean War.. There was a book about this horse's adventures of survival and I'd love to locate it, but I'm having difficulty not knowing the name.  Thanks :)

ANSWER: Hi Doris,
I have done a search for this fella but without any luck so far.
If you could provide any other information that would help, and I will keep trying to identify him. Sounds like a book I would like to read.
Horses have been used in most arenas of conflict since man first figure out it is a lot easiser to ride than walk, sitting on a horse gives a height advantage as well as speed and horse were trained to kick and bite with devestating effect.
The knights of old rode big cobs or shire horses that were very strong however as speed became more of an issue cavalry selected horses more suited to the job.
As there is such a lot of war history relating to horses I am sure we can find this bloke. If not it will be fun looking!
Cheers,
Don

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Well, I truly believe the horse's name started with a "W" and not a "V".  I'm pretty sure there was a II or III behind the name.  I'm pretty sure there was a "Prince" or "King" in front of the name, though I think it was "Prince".  I was in high school back in the 70s when I read this book, so I may have details truly fuzzied up by now ;).

As I recall, the horse was sort o' "on his own" at time and traveled to where he would again encounter people who would care for and use/abuse him to some degree or another.  I grew up on horses (western riding) and I learned to ride on an old Shire (names Sox) who needed no bridle and responded to foot taps and body weight -- what a great ol' guy he was!

The war could have been older?  I just don't remember well what war it was, but the story rings unique as it is a biography of the horse and not so much of his racing days.  There are likely battle scenes, but I think most of the bio rings around rural areas.  It may not be Turkey, either...

I wish I had more information to give you.  :(

Answer
Hi Doris,
This has turned out to be a real poser. I will begin a bit of detective work and see what I can come up with.

You could talk to some local librarians, they might know of it.
Other places you could try would be amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.

If it was in your school library back in the 70's they may still have a record of 'horse' books they have had.
What about old school friends who may also have read it. It obviously has left a lasting impression on you so maybe it did the same for one of your friends.

www wikipaedia is also a good resource.

If you have talkback radio in your area try them as well. Its amazing what information you can get from the local community.
Good luck,
Don.
