Winning a race without a whip

Question
Hello sir.my neighbour was a jockey.in his late 1980抯 , he won on a horse called KANCHEE. In the photo, I didn抰 find the whip in his hand.i asked him, whether he lost the whip anywhere in the race.he said that his trainer took the whip from his hands in the paddock and told him to handle without a whip.in the last 2 furlongs , he was in 6th position, in last furlong, 2nd position, and finished 1st by 3 lengths. I thought this was a good horse.he said that the horse was very bad, never allows a rider to mount on the horse.he bites, refuses to gallop He had a big gamble on that horse, but he was still not confident enough that he would win.he pushed in the last 2 fulongs  and won.so, may I know why didn抰 they use the whip on the horse

Answer
hi i have had many horses win many races with out the whip. some horses do not need  the whip to win and others hate to get hit at anytime in the race. AFTER All they are trying every step of the race, so why use a whip on them. i had A HORSE called Navajo family THAT WON 12 RACES IN ONE YEAR AND THE JOCKEY NEVER TOUCHED THE HORSE WITH THE WHIP, BUT I NEVER TOOK THE WHIP AWAY FROM THE JOCKEY EITHER. THANKS ..Ed Hess
