Starting into the business

Question
Hi stephanie. I was just wondering the basics on how to get into the horse training business and weather or not it would be a good decision for my futer. I was also wondering with college; is there classes on trainer and/or breeding stock. Thanks for all your help

Answer
Kyle,
Going to college first is a great idea.  An education is a huge help both for learning the business, and for something to fall back on if things don't work out.  Try one of the colleges with an equine program, such as the University of Arizona, or the University of Kentucky, they both have excellent equine degree programs.  Run a search on Google, that should bring up a few different colleges with equine degree programs.

Other than that, you pretty much have to start out at the bottom.  Find a breeding or training farm that will let you start out mucking stalls, then work your way up to grooming.  The next step is barn foreman, then assistant trainer, and the hopefully some day you can go out on your own as a trainer with clients.
But a degree will be a huge help when you are trying to attract clients to your stable, or trying to get a position with a successful farm.
Good Luck!
