Beginners marathon training - knee pain

2016/7/22 10:06:50

Question
Hi
I intend to run for the marathon with is after around 5 months. I am beginner and as i started running for the first week, i faced a knee pain since last 2 days. I would not have worried if it was a pain in thighs or muscle pain. My question is (1) Does the knee pain indicate that i need to stop my training and forget about the marathon? or (2) does it indicate i am running in wrong style and i need to work on my running style.. or (3) is this a normal phenomenon faced by all beginners? Can you please let me know urgently.

Answer
Hi Jeetendra
It does not mean you have to give up on your marathon training, but you have to correct the problem first before you can increase the intensity of your training. It has nothing to do about style, and as a beginner you will have issues from time to time with your muscular skeleton system.Your knee i would need some very specific pin point areas where you feel it and when it started. The most common complaint is tenderness and pain under and around the knee cap which would be chondromalacia. You could be just experiencing tendonitis which icing will help. You can use a stationary bike to supplement your training also.I hope this helps Jeetendra.

All the best

John
