weight training for half marathon

2016/7/22 10:11:29

Question
Hi John.  I've just started training for my first half marathon in August.  I would like to spend 2 days a week weight training.  What I've read so far suggests that I should use light weight with many repetitions.  Somehow, that is not making since to me...how do I get stronger if I don't increase weight?  I don't want to add bulk but I do want the benefit of being stronger.  What are your thoughts on this?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Lori
Since you just started training for your first half marathon,i would not reccomend you start a weight program at this time.I would focus your attention on 2 runs to build your strength and endurance with hills if possible. You want to do a mid week long run and the end of the week a run of fifty percent more than your mid week run. This will serve you much better than weights at this time.If you have any other questions just get in touch lori.

All the best

John
