tight calves

Question
Hi Carissa, I've started to jog on my treadmill, today was day 4, so as you can see not a lot of time put in yet.  I was walking for 40-45 minutes 5 days a week but wasn't seeing too much progress as far as losing weight goes so I decided to get the heart beat up by running.  The previous 3 days I jogged .6,.7,and .8 of a mile(3.7 mph).  Today I experienced a tightness in my calf strong enough to make me stop at .6 of a mile.  Is there anything I can do to alleviate this tightness?
I'm 58 yrs, 5'8", 180lbs and suffered a heart attack April 2010.
Thanks for your time.
Ken

Answer
Do you stretch before and after you run...especially afterwards makes a difference of how sore you will be the next day?

also you shouldn't increase by .1 every day, you are continually increasing, and since you just began jogging, you need to vary it. Like one day could be .5 of a mile, then the next .8, then the next .3 then the next .6, you get what I am saying? You need medium lengths, long lengths, and short lengths to let your body recover.

Finally, what type of shoes do you have? If you over or under pronate, then your shoes could be causing you harm.

Hope this helps!
