running and bigger legs

Question
Hi John,

One more question, since your an expert and im guessing you have seen the results people get from running. How long does it take on average to see results? Im running everyday (well at least 4-5 times a week)due to school for the past month...is it reasonable to hope for a dramatic change if i continue to just run and keep my diet clean by the middle end of march?

Thanks again.

Hi
I had a question about running. I recently started running for the past month and notice that my thighs are actually getting bigger. Im running at 5mph but will increase it up to 7-8mph every other minute. Is this too much. I want to look toned, but now it seems like Im just getting bigger and it's very discouraging. How can i just run and tone up without looking all big in  my thighs? I am only 5'1 and weight about 110. Before i was 105 and i want to loose the extra fat around my belly area and love handles. do you have any advice for me. thanks

Hi Keri
Genetics plays a big role in musculature. You will build some muscle, but what you will see mostly is more cut and define muscles, which is a good thing. To max fat loss you have to fine tune your diet with the proper balance of protein, carbs, and good fats such as olive oil, flax seed oil.The other ingredient is consistent training including weights.Your running is fine, but speed is not neccessary.Longer duration burns more calories unless your pressed for time. Most important in training is patience and being consistent with your program and goals.Any other questions just get in touch Keri.

All the best

HI John,
My dietis pretty good, healthy whole wheat foods, low in sat/trans fat, high in omega 3 via flaxseeds etc. Will running alone tone down legs making them appear thinner? I love running, but not so fond of weight training. I know i should do it to max fat loss since muscle burns fat, but will running alone be enough just to be toned in legs etc? Also, do legs actually get BIGGER if you run? My jeans aren't fitting like before, feels tighter around my thighs, so thats why im concerned.

Hi Keri
Your diet sounds great, and yes you could just stick to running because of your diet and your knowledge of the fat burning process.Your muscles in your legs will increase a little, but not like a body builder. As i said before, they will just get more cut and defined which is a good thing and very attractive in my opion.Hope this makes it clear Keri.

All the best

Answer
Hi Keri
It really depends on the miles your running, but i would say it is a little to premature to expect dramatic results.Give it time Keri, with your good eating habits and a good consistent focus you will shape those legs soon.

All the best

John
