Rope Inspection: kink

2016/7/22 8:47:36

Question
I recently went climbing in Oklahoma, came back and did some rope inspections. In the process I found what can only be called small kinks or small dents in the sheath of the rope. The rope sheath doesn't seem to be frayed or other wise damaged in these areas. I was wondering if you have ever heard of this damage type before and if it is serious???

Answer
Could the kinks have come from storage in the car or a pack and are really indentations from something resting upon it for a long period?  Was it stood upon while sitting on small rocks? If they did not pierce the sheath I wouldn't worry.  How old is your rope?  What size (diameter) is it?  Do you clean it regularly?  About once a year?

I would put it in the washing machine with a mild detergent and let it air dry.  You will be surprised how good it looks when it comes out, then re inspect it.    If you think it has serious problems keep it for top roping and get a new one for lead climbing. But my instinct is that it is fine.
