Question
Hello,I am a 30 year old young woman from Portugal, i ve been practising some trekking and running for 7 or 8 years. i am able to trekk difficult paths for many hours i am kinda fit, yet not exactely athletic.I am in the army but i am working in a army archive so we do not have much gymnastics. I am healthy, thin yet not very tall. I had recently lessons of basic mountaineering in a sports organization of my town and it was ok and successfull. I thik im going to go on to have more lessons because i just love it and its one of my dreams. I would like so much to keep this dream alive (when i was younger i had no money to buy equipment  so only now was possible)and be high mountain alpinist, i dont think ill be able to himalayas, but i would love go to the alps and pyreneans. Do you think i am too old already, being 30 years old right now??Thank you :)

Answer
Hello Silvia,  I too am Portugues. My grandparents immigrated to the United States for Madiera around 1910.  I do NOT think you are too old, at 30 I think you are in your prime. You have not only the physical skills the the mental and emotional maturity to be a very successful mountaineer.  The best mountaineers are in their late 30's and 40's.

Keep taking lessons and join a mountaineering group and go do it!  Mountaineering is more mental than physical, our minds give up before our bodies do. You seem to have the right desire to succeed. Good luck.

Jeff Vargen (Vargem) our name was changed by immigration)
