cleaning ropes

2016/7/22 8:48:45

Question
hi george,
i'm want to clean my mammut dynamic rope, in the past i have used wool wash and then i purchased a proper cleaner for climbing gear, however i don't have it with me.
is the rope adversely affected from the wool wash?
any other cheap alternative?

thanks
paul

Answer
Paul, I have three answers:

(1) I have cleaned my ropes with light dish soap for 30 years, and I never noticed a problem.  I seem to recall woolite is OK.
(2) Having said that, the proper thing to do is to consult the manufacturer.  Mammut, no doubt, has a website. So does the UIAA, which has safety info.
(3) I find the forums at rockclimbing.com to be interesting, and at times useful.  Some participants add links to their statement to help you judge their opinions. RC.com has a search engine, so you may start there to see if there isa thread.

Good Luck---------George Allen
