Maybe you can give me some tips?

Question
Hello, my name is Tyler Del Rio, 17, senior in high school, and have been rowing since freshman year. My current weight is only 135 and I am about 6' tall. My best 2k is, as of right now, a 7:23.6.
What do you suggest for me to do to get that time down as quickly as possible?

Answer
Hi Tyler: I attached a link to the Concept II web site that gives some suggested workout routines.

http://www.concept2.com/us/training/programs/default.asp

My gut assessment is that you are rowing to the best of your ability, but you are way under weight.  I was your height and competed at 145 and people referred to me as "skeletal" and "devoid of muscle" (even though I could bench press more than rowers much heavier than me).  It is a known fact that a heavier person will have a better erg score than a lighter person of equal ability based on momentum.

My suggestion is to supplement your rowing workouts with a weight training routine that emphasizes low repetitions and heavy weights to build some muscle mass.  You also need to up your calorie intake with healthy foods high in protein.

Good Luck/AP
