Age Limit for Divemaster

Question
QUESTION: Hi James,
Within the last year I have become real serious about my diving. I have worked my way up from PADI OW to rescue diver. I would very much like to do my divemaster. Sounds straight forward... the issue is that I am 51 years old. I exercise a little that keeps me fit enough to do drysuit coldwater dives, what fitness level and am I crazy to do the divemaster course. It seems I am getting older as my progression in diving courses continue or are they getting younger....
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Jim,

I say Go For it!

I think you will only bring more wisdom to the table, and, nowadays, 50 is the new 40 (I read that somewhere).

The best diving is smart diving, and smart means slow and comfortable.  Racing and exerting oneself only leads to increased risk of decompression sickness or other injuries.

Dive safely and have a great time!

saludos,
James

QUESTION: Thanks James. As a followup what type of exercises would you recommend to prepare for the DM stamina test. Unfortunately I don't have a pool nearby however do have the regular equipment goodies- treadmill, bike and bowflex.
Thanks again....

Answer
I think the most important thing is cardiovascular and to be able to avoid cramps, so your finning muscles are in good practice.  It's been a long time since I did that, but as I recall, it was only swimming, and only about 10 or 12 minutes of that, not too bad.  Cardio + situps + pushups will get you through 99% of anything anyone ever throws at you.  It's all about a strong trunk and a fit heart.

Best of luck,
James
