Question
My house is over 100 years old. cleaning out the attic , we came across a 12 guage shotgun. The side of the trigger assembly has  volunteer arms company stamped and near the trigger guard, the number 224655 is barely visible.  Where can I get information about this gun?  Thanks...jimmy

Answer
Hello James C. Still, JR.
The shotgun you found was manufactured by Crescent Firearms Company between 1892 and 1929. During these 37 years, many thousands of these shotguns were made. They were the less expensive, but well built, shotguns of their day. The 'Volunteer Arms Company' shotgun is only one of over 90 different names that were ordered by independent hardware or mercantile stores. This is why they are referred to as 'Hardware Store' firearms.
I wish I could have seen the look on your face, when you first saw it, dusted it off, and realized it was an old shotgun!
I hope this answered your question, and Thank You for asking for me. Charles Gage
