Question
Hello, I have a Hopkins and allen Arms Co. 12 gauge double barrel shotgun i am trying to find an age on it.  From what little i can find it looks like a date range of 1902-1914 but i would like to narrow that down.  its serial number is 16734.  Would you be able to narrow that down or point me in the direction to myself?  thanks!   on a side note, i have a .22 revolver high-standard double nine w-101 were they only manufactured in 1959?

Answer
Hello Rick.
I will answer your last question first, but not with just a 'yes'. High Standard began  production on the Double Nine with the W-100 in 1958 and W-101 in 1959. In 1960 the W-102 added the Longhorn, Posse and Natchez. Also in 1960, the W-103 was added with a few minor changes internally. It continued through 1961. 1962 began the series W-104 and continued into 1970 when the W-105 was added. This included the Hombre, Durango and Marshal. The W-105 also issued the NATO 49er in 1971. The W-106 issue included the High Sierra in .22-.22Mag. with interchangeable cylinders.
Now, lets look at your 'Hopkins and Allen Arms Company' shotgun. The generic answer most often given for manufacture date is 1902-1914. Actually, the name 'Forehand' was included on models from 1899 through 1908. This name was dropped in 1909 and the name read only 'Hopkins and Allen Arms Company Norwich, Conn.' until the companies demise in 1914-15. An actual date by serial number has not been determined, but with one in the low five digits such as yours, I would say it is closer to the year 1909 than to 1914. You ask if I can point you to more information, so I refer you to the book 'Tip-up Shotguns From Hopkins and Allen' by Charles Carder. I have not seen this book, but you might google it. I spent approximately three hour gathering this information, but there are hours and hours of research that can still be done on these two subjects.
I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
