Serial number on M1 Garand

I purchasedan M1 Garand in 02 to give to my Dad who passed away 2 weeks ago and the rifle came back to me. I was looking for the date of manufacture but am confussed. It is an H&R Arms serial number 4742728 and supposedly it should have a leter but it does not Help please
