lower back pain with inline skating

Question
I just got a new pair of larger wheel roller blades and am noticing significant lower back pain.  I am getting used to the new wheels so I am sure I lean forward more and am more cautious until I get used to them -- is there anything I can do to relieve the pain - any exercise or way to change my stance that would help?  I try to stand up straighter but I feel like I am going to fall backwards.

Answer
Hi Peggi,
I think you answered your own question.  Your back pain is most likely caused as a result of getting use to your new roller blades.  When something is different or new we allow our bodies to do some strange things which ends us causing us pain.  I would imagine that once you get use to your new blades the back pain will go away.

In the meantime.....try keeping your back straight and allow your knees to bend a little more.  Normally if you lean forward you don't have to bend your knees quite as much but by doing so you're hurting your back.

Every time you push think of it as sliding your back down a wall (to keep it straight) and press your shin into the tongue of your boot, as a new way of bending and pushing.  It will feel awkward at first but once you get use to it, you'll find you have better balance, more power and your back will stay aligned and hopefully not hurt you anymore.

As far as back exercises?  I think just keeping your back as straight as possible and getting use to your new blades will do the trick.

Good Luck.....I hope this helps.

Pat
