foot pain after endurance run

2016/7/21 18:02:09

Question
I recently completed 100km indurance run. During the event I was feeling pain on the outside of my foot on impact. On completion I had severe bruising along the edge of the five metatarsal extending up to the the third metatarsal and up to the lateral malleolus. There was pain when palpating around cuboid. I wonder if I have done damage to the Peroneus tendon. After a full week the swelling and bruising have gone, but pointing the foot still hurts. Do you think I have done permanent damage? I would like to be able to run again

Answer
Sorry to hear of your 100K difficulty. I am not qualified to give medical advice, but I consulted a chiropractor about this, who thinks you have tendonitis, not permanent damage.

Having done over 110 ultras myself, I can tell you that pain during these events is pretty normal, although I have seldom encountered bruising.

You will probably need to re-introduce running cautiously, perhaps start back with some walking for a while. You should never rush your recovery from a major effort like this. Give yourself time to heal, and I'm sure you will be able to move successfully on to your next race goal.
