Groupset upgrade

2016/7/16 9:28:43

Question
Hi George,

Probably a frequently asked question however. At the moment I have a Specilaized Allez Sport double with shimano tiagra groupset.

I was thinking of upgrading to something in a 10 speed as I feel I need an extra gear for climbing.

Could you suggest what I should upgrade to within the Shimano range 105 or Dura Ace maybe.

Also could you detail what parts I would need to upgrade.

I presume the shifter cables would not be exposed on the handlebars as a result of this upgrade?

Or would I be better off to upgrade the bike to another that has a higher spec Shimano set?

I am happy enough with the brakes I presume I can leave these as they are.

Thanks

John

Answer
Hello John,

The Allez is a hybrid bike right?

If so I would go with Shinamo LX. LX is a great mid-range entry level group. You can go with XTR but thats BIG bucks for minimal weight loss and a few aluminium parts opposed to steel, different bearings and all that.

Whats your budget like so I know?

For sure you will need a new cassette and chain since you are adding extra gears. If the chain if fairly new see if they can add links but rule of thumb is if you cet a new cog (cassette) you get a new chain.

What year is your bike? A cog here in Canada is ussually $100.00, a good chain is $35.00, the front crank $150.00 (oh yea I forgot you will need that too), the front deralieur (unless yours can go to a tripple) so we are looking at a few bucks for sure!

maybe just get a new bike...

Hope this helps. Sorry to keep it short but im at work and my home computer is in the shop!
