Aluminium boats moored on salt water

Question

The Boat
Hi there,
I am considering buying a 16ft alum bowrider(new). During the summer months I am considering leaving it on a saltwater mooring. Is this possible with an alum boat? What will happen to the hull?
Really would appreciate some advice.
Cheers

Answer
Dear Chris,

An aluminum can will dissolve in sea water in a mater of weeks.  A good zinc chromate primer with two coats of bottom paint is the way I would go.

You also have to worry about antifouling so that your bottom does not become ruff with growth.  If you go to www.boat-bottom-paint.com and look at the Urethane Teflon Antifouling bottom would be a good start.  Just use a sponge to wet sand you bottom lightly.  Then a coat of the grey epoxy primer and two coats of the navy blue boat bottom paint.  About 2 quarts  $80.  Is the way I would go.
