engine not staying on

Question
I have a 1997 Regal 1700 LSR with a 135hp 3.0L 4 cylinder Volvo Penta i/o.  The engine starts up but only stays on when ignition is turned all the way. If I release the ignition, the engine shuts off.  Could it be an ignition problem, a carberator problem or a fule pump problem?

This came on suddenly after a day of boating without any problems.

Answer
Hi Carlos...Thank you for selecting the undersigned to  respond to your question.

First of all, I'm not a mechanic.

Secondly, the symptom you described suggests a problem within the ignition switch, and it could be just a loose wire. Or, the ignition switch has failed and needs replacement.

Best you consult a qualified and reliable marine mechanic to do the troubleshooting and resolve the situation safely.
