Volvo penat engine on my boat!!

I have a 1989 regal sebring 120 hp volvo penta motor i took the boat out today and it started right up. when i took off it was fine but when i stopped and put it in nuetrual to an iddle position it stalls out. i start it up again but when i put it n gear it stalls out again what can it possibly be.

When was the timing chain last checked and adjusted, and when was engine last tuned up? Maybe it needs the carb rebuilt. Sometimes, the problem could involve clogged/leaking fuel lines, and don't forget to check the fuel pump, as well as the throttle control cable. Maybe the fuel is contaminated? Regular maintenance is important, in order to avoid a mechanical failure at the most inoportune time.
