Question
What does the term 'under sufferance' mean in horse racing..
                        Thanks...

Answer
This term means the horse was under excessive pressure and stress for most of the race. Early in a race where a horse had to fight for early position, possibly for the lead and hold it, on a fast pace, would warrent the use of this term. Usually a horse doesn't finish well if he was "under sufferance".
