jockeys license

Question
Hi Ed,

I'm not sure if you can answer this question or not (I'm hoping you can!), but I'm having a difficult time finding information on exactly what steps are required to obtain a jockey's license in Kentucky.  I'm doing a research project and need to know the steps a person would take to go from exercise rider to apprentice jockey, and from apprentice jockey to journeyman.

As I currently understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong), at least in KY, a rider is first asked to ride up to three races with a temporary license and then may be asked to demonstrate further knowledge/ability with horses (I assume this is on the track, a riding demonstration?).

My difficulty is in finding out how to actually get a license--is it a paper application at that point that you turn into the track and then goes to the stewards for review, based on the three races that you've already ridden in?  Or is there some other riding demonstration that is required before the license is granted?  Any help would be appreciated, and as much detail as possible.

Thanks,
Kelsie

Answer
HI --IN ORDER TO GET A JOCKEY LICENSE YOU MUST FIRST GET A EXERCISE RIDERS LICENSE AND WORK  FOR A HORSE TRAINER GALLOPING HORSES AND WORKING HORSES. THEN AFTER SOME PERIOD OF TIME ,YOU CAN APPLY FOR A JOCKEY LICENSE. YOU SHOULD HAVE QUITE A BIT OF EXPERIENCE GALLOPING AND WORKING HORSES BEFORE YOU CAN EVER TRY TO GET A JOCKEY LICENSE. YOU BECOME A APPRENTICE RIDER FIRST, THEN AFTER YOU WIN SO MAY RACES, YOU BECOME A JOURNEYMAN RIDER. HOPE THAT HELPS. YOU   THANKS  ED HESS
