what is the difference in racing performance

Question
Dear Sir,
My question is;
What is the difference in a racing performance in between two different thoroughbred?
for instance they are in the same peak condition but the difference is that one of those two did not race for 6 months;is this a disadvantage; stayed back off the racing
Some trainers say it is a disadvantage to be off racing for 6 months although it is in a peak racing condition
Some says it is not a disadvantage if the conditioning training processed
I would like to know which is right and why?
I thank you very much for your precious time
Kind regards,
Hakan

Answer
Hi Hakam,
This is not an easy question to answer. In fact it is more of a discussion topic than a question.
Basically the answer lies in the experience of the trainer of each horse.
Some horses need an extended break after a hard season. Six months would be reasonable if you wanted to rest the horse and start from scratch. Usually if a horse finishes a season because of track conditions not suiting but is otherwise fit and well it may only need a short break of say a few weeks. Its not about the horse its about the track conditions.
There is no reason why a horse returning to racing after being out for six months should not win. Even against seasoned horses.
Its a matter of experience.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Don.
PS: It would be interesting to pose this question among several trainers and jockeys over a drink or two. The answers and points of view will be many and varied.
