extending

Question
How do I teach my horse to extend, mainly at a gallop? Does it come naturally, or is there something I can do to help him reach?

Answer
Catherine,

As your horse relaxes, generally he will extend naturally.  If he is carrying his head too high, though, he won't be able to get enough extension. If this is the case, you might try a shadow roll in order to get the horse's head lower, which will in turn free up his shoulder, allowing him to get more extension.

Good Luck!
