calf/shin muscle pain while jogging

Question
Hi!
first, i'm 19 years old. I haven't ran in like a year...I've never had this problem a year ago. I haven't been doing much physical activity. I gained 30 pounds in that year and now i decided to start running again. If i jog for less than one minute, my calf and shin muscles start hurting like the muscles are being overworked and i have to stop. Even sit down sometimes because the pain is bad. When i feel the muscles they're very hard and tight. Is it because of the extra weight? I just don't understand how they can be so weak. How do i make them stronger? This is greatly interfering with my cardio...They even hurt if i power walk for awhile. So do you have any advice? thanks a lot

Answer
Hi Ronald
What your experiencing can be quite normal for some one just coming back from a long lay off.The extra weight can make a difference, but it is mostly just lack of activity. You just have to go slowly and gradually build back up.Your body will adapt over time.Adding some biking, either a road bike or stationary bike is also a great tool to supplement your jogging. To eliminate some of the discomfort you want to ice them as often as you can. Also epson salt baths are great for enhancing recovery. If you have other questions just get in touch Ronald.

All the best

John
