post 1/2 marathon

Question
Hi John.  I completed my first 1/2 marathon...it was fantastic!  I felt great, ran at a comfortable pace (I didn't want to push myself for my first race since my goal was just to finish) and ended with a time of 2:18:43.  I'm not going to win any races with that time but I am pleased.  Ok, so here is my quetion...throughout the race and immediately afterwards I felt wonderful.  I "gulped" down some gatorade  afte the race and then 20 minutes later I felt terrible.  I had stomach cramping, chills, shakiness, nausea and diarrhea and about an hour later the vomiting kicked in.  I've spent the last 2 days fighting off nausea, diarrhea and vomiting with little more than a banana and a few sips of H2O.  At first I thought that my blood sugar level dropped (the symptoms seem to fit) but I don't believe that it should last 2 days.  Any idea on what I did wrong or what I can do to prevent this?  I plan on running another race in January and am afraid that I'll have the same reaction.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Carly
That is music to my ears. You deserve to be comended for a successfull debut half marathon.Carly you and your body have accomplised so much recently with the weight loss and half marathon.I would not worry about your situation for a while. You have put your body thru hell in the weight loss and race and your body i'm sure is just still ajusting. It could last 2 days or more. What you did is very hard work.Give it a few weeks and get back to me and now just relax and faver the experience and accomplishment. What you experienced after can easily happen even for some very fit people.Don't worry about janruary it is not here yet.Just focus on your recovey from this one.

All the best

John
