Running 1000 m

Question
My Daughter is in 10 grade and started track this year. She is athletic. Question is when she runs 1000m indoors after her run she says that her throat hurts and gets dry. After her run she also noticed that her legs were kind of numb which does not happen when she runs outside. Is there anything that can help this or is this normal?

Answer
Sal,

Both things are quite common. The first is the numbness in the legs. I am guessing that the numbness only lasts a short while, probably at the end of a race and for a few minutes afterward right? This is because she is racing. When you race, the body starts to produce lactic acid, which builds up in the legs. As more lactic acid accumulates, your legs begin to feel like rubber and become numb. I experienced that in every race I have ever run. It is normal so don't worry.

As you get in shape, you will be able to run farther and faster before lactic acid accumulates.

As far as the breathing goes, indoor tracks are often hot and dry and this can make it difficult to breathe. I always had this when running indoors. Not much you can do about that either; however, it is natural and is nothing to worry about.
