Question
I am volunteering to coach my daughter's jr. high track team (we will compete in 2 - 3 meets this spring).  I am a recreational runner who has run in several 5K and a few 5 mile races.  Can you offer any tips to get started and to help these kids so they can have the best experience possible?

Answer
How are ya coach Dawn
The experience good or bad will be based on your pre planning and developing a line of comunication with the kids and the parents a like starting right now.
The more you treat this as a serious comitment, and even thought they are kids, it will run much smoother and you will get much more attention and respect from both parties with a fun rewarding and exciting season.
I would first recomend you start out with a business plan in place for you to follow and keep you focused on the different time tables and dead lines you have to reach.
Second i would send out a introductory letter to all parents and kids introducing your self and your mission statement for the coming season and a sign up list for the athletes and if you want some assistant coaches to help you with the team.
The list of things you can do are endless to heighten there experience, but i would keep it very professional.
A few things to include below.

1. news letter
2. get togethers leading
up to the season for focus
motivation event selection etc.
3.ass't coach planning sessions
will help comitment from them
and make your job easier
4.set up training and meet schedules
5.some kids might want to start training
now,if you creat that kind of excitement
for them to get involved.

I have a running club back in new jersey which i founded 23 years ago 250 members strong which runs it self today. The key is delagation and planing from the start dawn.Take a look at the web site and brouse to get some ideas for your team.www.essexrunning.com

Dawn i hope this helps a little, and if there is anything else feel free to call me or get in touch anytime.

The very best to you
and a successfull saeson
