treadmill vs street

Question
Hi Sarah-
I am very new to running.  I started a run/walk training program on my treadmill and was able to get up to about 5 minutes of straight running at a time.  I decided to take myself out on the road and I feel like I am starting all over again!  I run on a pretty flat road, no hills and yet I find myself not being able to last as long.
Is this all in my head or is there a difference between running on the street and running on the treadmill?
Thanks !

Answer
There definately is a difference between treadmill and road. I do most of my winter training on a treadmill and find I really struggle when I get back on the road again in the Spring!
You could try to do your speedwork on the treadmill say once a week and focus your main training on the road. Don't worry road running will get easier it just takes time to adjust again!!
Hope this helps!
Sarah
