Belaying

Question
I am in an engineering class at Martin Luther King High School and am working on a product for rock climbing. My partners and I would like to design a product that would allow someone to belay themselves safely and without a partner. If you could please take this short survey it would help us out greatly, thank you for your time.
  Laura

Do you rock climb?
Does it annoy you that you must always have a belayer to safely climb?
Do you climb alone?
If not would you want to climb alone?
Would you enjoy being able to safely belay yourself from above or below without a partner?
Have you tried any of the self-belay products on the market?
Did they work to your expectations?
Would you change anything about these products if you could?

Answer
Laura,

I see no point in the self belay for fifth class climbing. A large part of climbing is sharing the experience with your partner. I have tried self belay devices on the market and find they detract rather than inhance the climbing experience. I see no reason to use them unless you are a person who likes being alone.
